The Oversized Tailoring Trend A/W 23 - Your guide to getting it right.
Oversized tailoring is one of this seasons hottest trends. With traditional tailoring pieces now cut with a more capacious fit adds a relaxed element to these inherently polished pieces. Pieces in which have often been designed to sculpt the female form more graciously for an elevated power look.
It is evident that tailoring is a phenomenon that will never go out of style. Sartorial pieces will always be key iconic items for every single womens and mens wardrobe. But what will change from season to season is how these pieces are cut, shaped and styled. Welcome to the new seasons trend of “Oversized” tailoring.
Styling oversized suits for women can be a voguish and comfortable choice. Gone of the days where suits were strictly worn for the world of work, suiting has now become a “go-to” look for being a boss and women who are about their business. Appearing on red carpets, press & media appearances, suiting is now more than ever an iconic essential, adamant to be part of the wardrobe. Here are some of my tips for rocking oversized tailoring the right way:
1. Balance is Key:
Getting the oversizing right is key to any on-trend look. If you're wearing oversized pants, pair them with a fitted or tucked-in top. This creates a sense of balance and prevents your entire outfit from looking too oversized and ill fitting.
Jacket sizing is also key. Make sure that the shoulder seams of the jackets are either 1-2 inches past your own shoulders and that your sleeve length hits right on the bone of your thumb. Any longer, the jacket will look like its 3 sizes too big with no real consideration of balancing oversized with your body proportions. Even though the trend is oversized, make sure the clothing still fits well in certain areas. These include, your shoulder seams, sleeve length and waistline.
2. Monochrome Magic:
Wearing oversized pieces in a single colour can create a sleek and modern look. This helps maintain a cohesive appearance, especially when dealing with larger silhouettes. Keep the tones natural, in soft palettes and earthy hues to prevent distraction to the style.
3. Layer Thoughtfully:
Layering can add depth to your outfit. Consider layering a fitted jacket over an oversized shirt. This adds structure and prevents the outfit from looking shapeless. Be mindful of the fabrics you are layering. Keep them light and soft, simple and not fussy. This elevates the look of luxury and keep the bulk to a minimum when layering.
4. Accessorise Smartly:
Use accessories to add definition to your outfit. Accessories can make or break an outfit and is the icing on the cake. A belt can cinch the waist of an oversized pair of pants, giving you a more structured look and again highlighting your key body features. Chunky rings on multiple fingers, statement earring mixed with both delicate and chunky bangles are all the rage this season.
5. Footwear Matters:
Opt for footwear that complements the oversized silhouette. Ankle boots, strapped heels, or sneakers can all work, depending on the overall style you're going for. Just remember to keep in mind the length of your trousers and have them tailored accordingly.
6. Play with Proportions:
And finally mix and match oversized pieces with more fitted items to create visual interest. An oversized look doesn’t always have to consist of both the jacket and trouser being oversized. So experiment with proportions. For example, if you're wearing an oversized jacket, consider pairing it with slim-fit or boyfriend cut jeans.
Regardless of how you choose to style your suiting this season, wear it with confidence. Feeling good in what your wearing is the most important aspect of any outfit.
Remember, fashion is a form of self-expression, so feel free to experiment and find what works best for your personal style. Enjoy playing with different combinations and discovering the versatility of oversized tailoring!
